About the band:
Without ever leaving the territory of jazz, a combo that goes from traditional tango to the music of Astor Piazzola.
Tango Jazz Quartet (TJQ) from Argentina, mixes the melodic and rhythmic patterns of Tango with the harmonies and improvisation of Jazz. This new approach to tango and jazz has received an enthusiastic response both in Argentina and abroad. The Tango Jazz Quartet's music goes from traditional tango to Astor Piazzola's music without ever leaving the territory of jazz.
Saxophonist and clarinettist Gustavo Firmenich, leader of the TJQ, recreated with this group dances during the golden age of tango in Buenos Aires, where tango and jazz coexisted although they play separately. Tango Jazz Quartet proposed a fusion of what the two genres have in common and added something distinctive of jazz that was lacking in tango: improvisation.
This musical concept is very well received by very different audiences around the world. "This is the first time I've heard a fusion of Jazz and Tango that works and makes sense," said world- renowned French accordionist Richard Galliano of the Tango Jazz Quartet.
